About the Test Score Calculator
This test score calculator divides correct answers by total questions and multiplies by 100 to get the percentage, then converts it to a letter grade and to any score scale you like (out of 100, 20, 10 or a custom maximum). For tests where questions carry different weights, use Points mode and enter points earned and points possible.
The grading chart lists every possible number of correct answers with its percentage, score and letter grade — just like a teacher’s easy grader — and Points per question mode tells you how much each question is worth.
How to use
- Pick a mode: Questions when every question is worth the same, Points when questions carry different points.
- Enter the total and the number correct (or points earned and possible). The percentage and score update as you type.
- Choose the scale for the score — out of 100, 20, 10, 5 or a custom maximum.
- Adjust the grading scale cut-offs (A 90%, B 80%, …) to match your school or syllabus.
- Use Points per question to see what each question is worth and a chart of scores by number correct.
How to calculate a test score
| What | Formula | Example (17 of 20) |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage | correct ÷ total × 100 | 17 ÷ 20 × 100 = 85% |
| Score out of N | percentage ÷ 100 × N | 8.5 out of 10 |
| Points per question | total points ÷ questions | 100 ÷ 20 = 5 |
| Points lost per wrong answer | same as points per question | 3 wrong = −15 |
Standard letter grade scale
| Letter | Percentage | GPA |
|---|---|---|
| A | 90–100% | 4.0 |
| B | 80–89% | 3.0 |
| C | 70–79% | 2.0 |
| D | 60–69% | 1.0 |
| F | below 60% | 0.0 |
Many schools use plus/minus grades (e.g. B+ 87–89%, A− 90–92%) or a stricter 93/85/77/70 scale. Edit the letters and cut-offs in the grading scale card above to match yours.
FAQ
What is 17 out of 20 as a percentage?
17 ÷ 20 × 100 = 85%, which is a B on the standard 90/80/70/60 scale. Each question is worth 5 points.
How many points is each question worth on a 25-question test?
100 ÷ 25 = 4 points per question. Points per question mode shows this and a chart of the score for every number correct.
How do I calculate a grade when questions have different points?
Use Points mode: enter the points earned (e.g. 42.5) and the total possible (e.g. 50). That is 85%.
Can I change the grade cut-offs?
Yes. Edit the letter names and minimum percentages in the grading scale card. Your settings are saved in this browser.
