About the Bill Splitter
This bill splitter handles the two situations that come up after every dinner, trip or shared house bill. Split evenly divides a total by the number of people and rounds each share up to a convenient amount, with optional adjustments for anyone who should pay less (didnโt drink, skipped the appetizer) or more.
Settle up is for when several people paid for different things, like one person booking the Airbnb and another paying for groceries. Enter what everyone paid and you get a short list such as โJordan โ Alex $50.00โ that evens everything out with as few payments as possible.
How to use
- Choose Split evenly or Settle up at the top.
- Split evenly: enter the total and the number of people, then pick a rounding amount. Open Adjust per person to enter โ/+ amounts for individuals.
- Settle up: enter each personโs name and how much they paid. Leave it empty for people who paid nothing.
- Tap Copy result and paste it into your group chat. Your entries are saved in this browser.
How settling up works
- Add up everything that was paid and divide by the number of people to get each personโs fair share.
- For each person, calculate amount paid โ fair share. A positive balance means they get money back; a negative balance means they owe.
- The person who owes the most pays the person who is owed the most, and so on. This needs at most (people โ 1) payments.
Example: Alex paid $120, Sam $48, Jordan $0 and Taylor $32. The total is $200, so the fair share is $50 each: Jordan โ Alex $50, Taylor โ Alex $18, Sam โ Alex $2.
If the total doesnโt divide evenly to the cent, the extra cents are assigned one by one to the people at the top of the list.
Rounding up and the leftover
$186.40 split four ways is $46.60 each. Rounding up to whole dollars makes it $47 each, which leaves $1.60 extra for whoever collects the money, enough to cover the tip rounding or a payment app fee. Choose $0.01 to split to the exact cent.
FAQ
How do I let someone pay less?
In Split evenly, open Adjust per person and enter a negative amount such as โ15 for that person. The difference is shared equally by everyone else.
Is this the minimum number of payments?
The tool matches the biggest debtor with the biggest creditor first, so it never needs more than (people โ 1) payments and finds the smallest number in almost every real-world case.
How many people can I add?
Up to 50 people.
Are names and amounts stored?
They are saved only in this browser so you can come back later. Nothing is sent to a server.
