A quick rule of thumb: annual salary ≈ hourly wage × 2,000, so $25 an hour is about $50,000 a year (exactly $52,000 with 2,080 hours), and a $60,000 salary is about $30 an hour ($28.85 exactly).

Things to keep in mind

  • Results are gross pay. Federal and state income tax, Social Security, Medicare and benefit deductions reduce take-home pay.
  • Non-exempt employees earn 1.5× pay for hours over 40 a week; this converter does not add overtime.
  • Biweekly pay is weekly pay × 2; there are 26 biweekly paychecks a year, not 24.
  • When comparing a salaried and an hourly job, also compare paid time off, health insurance and retirement matching.

FAQ

How much is $20 an hour per year?

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, $20 an hour is $41,600 a year, $3,466.67 a month and $800 a week before taxes.

How do I convert my salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the annual salary by the hours you work in a year. For a standard 2,080-hour year, a $75,000 salary is $36.06 an hour. Select “Annual”, enter the salary and the hourly rate is shown at the top.

Why does a month have 173.33 hours?

A full-time year has 2,080 hours (40 × 52). Divided by 12 months that is 173.33 hours, which is why monthly pay is not simply weekly pay × 4.

Should I use 52 or fewer weeks?

Use 52 if you are paid for holidays and vacation. If you are paid only for the weeks you work, for example with two weeks of unpaid leave, enter 50.
