About the Tip Calculator
Figuring out the tip at the end of a meal shouldn’t need mental math. Enter the subtotal from your receipt, tap 15%, 18%, 20% or type any percentage, and the tip calculator shows the tip, the total and each person’s share. The table compares every common percentage at once, so you can pick what feels right.
How to use
- Enter the bill amount before tax and tip (the subtotal on the receipt).
- Tap a tip percentage or type your own.
- Increase Split between if you’re sharing the bill, and choose Round up to avoid coins or cents.
- Open Add sales tax separately to include tax in the total. Tip is usually based on the pre-tax amount.
How much to tip in the US
| Service | Typical tip |
|---|---|
| Sit-down restaurant | 18–20% (15% for basic service, 25%+ for excellent) |
| Bar | $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab |
| Food delivery | 15–20%, at least $3–5 |
| Taxi / rideshare | 15–20% |
| Hairdresser, barber | 15–20% |
| Hotel housekeeping | $3–5 per night |
| Coffee counter, takeout | Optional, 0–10% |
Customs vary by region and venue; treat these as guidelines. In much of Europe and Asia a service charge is included or tipping is not expected.
The formulas
- Tip = bill before tax × tip %
- Total = bill + tax + tip
- Per person = total ÷ number of people
Example: an $86.40 bill with an 18% tip gives a $15.55 tip and a $101.95 total, or $50.98 each for two people. If each share is rounded up to $51, the actual tip becomes $15.60 (about 18.06%).
FAQ
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Etiquette guides recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, but many people tip on the total. The difference is small (the tax rate times the tip %), and the calculator lets you choose either.
What if gratuity is already included?
Check the receipt for “gratuity” or “service charge”. Many restaurants add 18–20% automatically for groups of six or more; if so, you don’t need to tip again.
How do I fill in a card receipt?
Write the tip amount on the Tip line and the total on the Total line, then sign. Copy both numbers straight from the calculator.
Can I use it in other currencies?
Yes. Pick a currency from the list; yen and won are shown without decimals.
