About the Typing Speed Test

This typing speed test gives you one sentence at a time. Type it as quickly and accurately as you can: your words per minute (WPM), accuracy and time update live, and mistakes are highlighted in red. When you finish a sentence, the next one loads automatically, so you can keep going for a quick one-minute check or a longer practice session.

Everything runs in your browser โ€“ no account needed, and your personal best is stored only on this device.

How to use

  1. Click the input box (or tap it on a phone) and start typing the sentence shown above. The timer starts with your first keystroke.
  2. Keep your eyes on the text. Wrong characters turn red; fix them with Backspace or carry on.
  3. At the end of the sentence your WPM and accuracy appear, and the next sentence loads automatically.
  4. Type several sentences to see your average, and try to beat your personal best.

How WPM is calculated

Typing tests count a โ€œwordโ€ as 5 characters, including spaces and punctuation, so long and short words are treated fairly. This test counts only correctly typed characters:

WPM = (correct characters รท 5) รท minutes

For example, if you type a 60-character sentence with no mistakes in 15 seconds, that is 12 words in a quarter of a minute: 48 WPM. Mistakes don't add to your speed, so slowing down to stay accurate usually gives a better score. Accuracy is the share of characters you typed correctly.

What is a good typing speed?

WPMLevel
under 20Hunt and peck
20โ€“30Beginner
30โ€“40Average adult
40โ€“55Above average

Most people type around 35โ€“40 WPM. Typing on a phone is usually slower than on a full keyboard.

FAQ

How can I type faster?

Learn touch typing: keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF and JKL;), use all ten fingers and don't look at the keyboard. Practice a few minutes every day and focus on accuracy first โ€“ speed follows.

Why can't I paste the sentence?

Pasting is blocked so the result reflects real typing speed.
