About the Seating Chart Maker
This seating chart generator assigns seats at random for classrooms, tutoring centres, offices and events. Choose the rows (front to back) and seats per row (left to right), paste your names and press Shuffle seats. Students who need a front seat for eyesight or health reasons can be locked, and unused desks can be marked empty. The order is shuffled with the browser's cryptographic random generator (crypto).
How to use
- Choose the number of rows and seats. Rows are counted from the front, next to the teacher's desk.
- Paste names one per line (or separated by commas) โ copying a column from a spreadsheet works too.
- If needed, choose ๐ Lock and tap a seat to keep that student in place, or ๐ซ Empty to mark seats nobody uses.
- Press Shuffle seats: everyone except locked students is seated at random. Use โ Swap to exchange two seats by hand.
- Print prints just the chart with the teacher's desk marked. For the wall, also print a copy in Teacher view.
Student view vs. teacher view
Student view shows the teacher's desk at the top, exactly as students see the room when facing the board โ good for posting at the back of the classroom. Teacher view puts the desk at the bottom and mirrors left and right, matching what the teacher sees from the front. Handy for taking attendance.
Seating tips
- Turn on Pairs to draw seats in twos, just like a room with double desks.
- If there are more names than seats, the tool lists who didn't get a seat. Add rows or seats, or free some empty seats.
- Copy table copies a tab-separated table you can paste straight into Excel or Google Sheets.
- The chart and names are saved in your browser, so next month's reshuffle takes one click.
FAQ
Can I keep a student in the front row?
Yes. Move the student to the seat with Swap, then tap that seat in Lock mode. A padlock appears and the seat stays put when you shuffle.
How big can the room be?
Up to 10 rows ร 10 seats (100 seats). On a phone, swipe the chart sideways if there are many seats.
What if two students have the same name?
Each name gets its own seat. To tell them apart, add an initial, like "Emma B." and "Emma K.".
Are student names uploaded anywhere?
No. Names and seating are stored only in your browser and never sent to a server.
