About the Number to Words Converter
This converter spells out any number up to 999 trillion in English words. In amount mode it writes dollars and cents the way you would on a contract or invoice (“One thousand five hundred dollars and twenty-five cents”) and in check format (“One thousand five hundred dollars and 25/100”).
In number mode it shows both American English (“one hundred twenty-three”) and British English (“one hundred and twenty-three”), and reads decimals digit by digit (“three point one four”).
How to use
- Type the number or amount. Commas are optional.
- Choose “Dollar amount” for dollars and cents or “Number in words” for plain numbers, decimals and negatives.
- Press “Copy” next to the version you need and paste it into your check, contract or document.
How to write a check amount in words
On a US check, write the dollar amount in words on the line ending in “Dollars”, with the cents as a fraction over 100: One thousand five hundred and 25/100. Start as far left as possible and draw a line through the unused space so nothing can be added. If there are no cents, write and 00/100 or and no/100.
| Amount | In words |
|---|---|
| $45.00 | Forty-five and 00/100 |
| $120.50 | One hundred twenty and 50/100 |
| $1,500.25 | One thousand five hundred and 25/100 |
| $10,000.00 | Ten thousand and 00/100 |
Rules for writing numbers in words

- “Hundred”, “thousand” and “million” stay singular after a number: two hundred, five million.
- Don’t use commas between the parts in words: one million two hundred thousand.
