About the Mic Test

This online mic test checks whether the microphone on your computer or phone works, right in your browser. Run it before a video call, online class or game chat to make sure your mic picks up sound and isn’t too quiet or distorted.

Audio is analyzed only inside your browser and recordings are never uploaded. Close the page and the recording is gone.

How to use

  1. Press Start mic test and click Allow when your browser asks to use the microphone.
  2. Talk or clap and watch the volume bar and waveform move. Movement in the green zone means a good level.
  3. If you have more than one mic, switch between them under Microphone to compare.
  4. Press Record 5 seconds, say something, and play it back to hear how others will hear you.

Mic not working? Try this

  • Permission blocked: click the lock (site settings) icon left of the address bar → Microphone → Allow, then reload.
  • Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone — turn on Microphone access and Let desktop apps access your microphone. Also check the input device under Sound settings.
  • macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone, and turn on your browser.
  • Bar doesn’t move: check the mute switch on your headset, the input volume, and whether another app (Zoom, Teams, Discord) is holding the mic.
  • In-app browsers (Instagram, Facebook, etc.) often don’t support the microphone. Open the page in Chrome or Safari.

How to read the level meter

The level is shown in dBFS, where 0 dB is the digital maximum. The closer the number is to 0, the louder the sound.

FAQ

Is my recording saved anywhere?

No. The recording is kept briefly in your browser’s memory only so you can play it on this page. It is never sent to a server and disappears when you close the page.

My voice sounds too quiet.

Raise the microphone input volume (gain) in your system sound settings and keep the mic about 4–8 inches (10–20 cm) from your mouth. A headset mic usually sounds clearer than a laptop’s built-in one.

The recording sounds processed, with less echo and noise.

Browsers turn on echo cancellation and noise suppression for calls by default. Zoom, Google Meet and similar services sound much the same.

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes, in Safari and Chrome on iOS 14.3 or later. If you hear nothing on playback, check that your phone isn’t in silent mode.
