About the Phone Number QR Code Generator
A phone number QR code lets people call or text you straight from a flyer, sign or business card, without copying digits by hand or dialing the wrong number. The Phone/SMS tab is already selected, so just enter your number.
It’s a static QR code with the number stored in the image: no expiry, no scan limit, no sign-up. Your number is processed only in your browser and never sent to a server.
How to use
- Type the number in the Phone number field. Spaces, dashes and brackets are removed automatically, so
(555) 123-4567is fine. - For a call QR code, leave Text message empty. For a text QR code, enter the message to pre-fill, e.g.
I’d like to book a table. - If people abroad may scan it, use international format with the country code, e.g.
+1 555 123 4567(see the table below). - Open Design to change colors or add a logo, then click Download PNG or Download SVG.
- Scan it once with an iPhone and an Android phone before printing to check the number.
How call and SMS QR codes work
| Type | What’s inside the QR code | When scanned |
|---|---|---|
| Call (message empty) | tel:+15551234567 | A “Call” prompt appears; tapping it opens the dialer |
| SMS (message entered) | SMSTO:+15551234567:I’d like to book a table | Messages opens with the number and text filled in |
- Scanning never places a call or sends a text by itself. The person still has to tap Call or Send.
- The iPhone Camera app, most Android cameras and Google Lens recognize both formats. A few older reader apps only show the raw text.
- The longer the message, the denser the code. Keep it to a sentence or two.
International format and ideas
| Local number | International format |
|---|---|
US/Canada (555) 123-4567 | +1 555 123 4567 |
UK mobile 07700 900123 | +44 7700 900123 (drop the leading 0) |
Australia mobile 0412 345 678 | +61 412 345 678 (drop the leading 0) |
- A number with + and the country code works from any phone, at home or abroad, so it’s the safest choice. Toll-free numbers often can’t be reached from abroad; keep those in local format.
- Ideas: “Call now” on flyers and yard signs, shop windows and storefront signs, real estate signs, food trucks, a “text to book” code for salons, event sign-ups by text.
- A QR code on a public sign exposes the number to anyone. Consider a business line or a second number rather than your personal mobile.
- Want people to save your name, number and email at once? Use the Contact tab (vCard). For WhatsApp, put a
https://wa.me/link in the URL tab.
FAQ
Does scanning call the number automatically?
No. The phone shows the number and asks before calling. For SMS codes, the message opens as a draft and the person must tap Send.
Can I make an SMS QR code without a message?
In this tool an empty message produces a call (tel:) code. To open the messaging app instead, enter at least a short message such as “Info”.
Who pays for the text message?
The person who scans and sends it, according to their phone plan. The QR code itself is free.
What if my phone number changes?
The number is stored inside the image, so you’ll need to create and print a new code. As long as the number stays the same, the code works forever.
Is my phone number stored anywhere?
No. The QR code is drawn in your browser and the number and message are never sent to a server.
